Markham Bylaw 2018-17 allows for the payment of a rebate to individuals who make contributions to candidates for Markham Council (Mayor, Regional Councillor or Ward Councillors) in the 2026 Municipal Election. The Campaign Contribution Rebate Program does not apply to contributions made to School Board Candidates or Third Party Advertisers. Candidates are required to follow the requirements of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and comply with Bylaw 2018-17.
Donors can receive one 75% rebate to a maximum of $150
- Each rebate is based on the sum total of all eligible donations made to one or more candidates who are participating in the same election
- Up to $1,200 can be donated to a single candidate
- Up to $5,000 total can be donated to multiple candidates
- Apply for your rebate by the deadline using the information on your contribution receipt provided by the candidate you donated to
- If someone donates more than $100, the law requires that their name and address is reported in the candidate’s post-election financial statement and published on electionsmarkham.ca
- Rebates are issued 120 days after the application deadline
- Rebates are issued if the participating candidate files a complete and accurate post-election financial statement, as required by law
To receive a rebate:
- Contributors must be individual residents in the City of Markham and the candidate to whom they are making a campaign contribution must be participating in the rebate program
- Corporations or Trade Unions may NOT contribute to a candidate’s campaign and are not eligible for a rebate from the City
- Contributors must apply to the City for the rebate using the prescribed form and within the designated time frame
- Contributors may donate up to $1,200.00 to one or more candidates
- A contributor shall not make contributions exceeding a total of $5,000.00 to candidates for office on the same Council
- A rebate will be issued no earlier than the end of June 2027, providing there is no contravention of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 by either the candidate or contributor and that deadline was met.
If a contributor makes a contribution of over $100.00, their name and address must be reported in the candidate’s financial disclosure and will be posted on the City’s website.
